African Greys

Congo African Greys
One of the most sensitive and intelligent within the parrot species, the Congo African Grey is highly sought after by enthusiasts for its ability to learn to talk and mimic a wide variety of sounds.  They are known for their talking ability and can even learn to speak in context.  Keep in mind that there is never any guarantee that a Grey will learn to mimic human speech.  However, many Greys usually begin talking once they reach one year old.

The Congo African Grey tends to be shy by nature with little tolerance for strangers. These parrots must be provided a loving and comfortable environment as well as a large cage and a variety of toys to keep this very intelligent parrot from being bored.

Congo African Greys generally reach maturity at about 3 years of age. At maturity, they measure anywhere from 13 to 14 inches in length. Given the appropriate nutritional requirements in a nurturing environment, Congo African Greys can have a lifespan of 50 to 70 years.

It is important to spray or mist your Congo African Grey regularly (best time of day for this activity is in the morning). This is especially necessary since the Congo African Grey produces a dry powder when preening. Spraying or misting with water helps to keep your parrot looking his best.

If you are looking for a loyal and loving companion to share your life, the Congo African Grey may be the perfect match for you.

Timneh African Greys
Timneh African Greys are smaller than the Congo African Greys at about 11 to 12 inches in length.  They are mostly dark gray versus the lighter to silver gray of the Congo.  The Timnehs have dark maroon tails and a white patch of skin around their eyes.  Their upper beak is partially bone-colored as compared to the totally black beak of the Congo.  The Congos tend to be more popular primarily because of their larger size, lighter color, and brighter red tails.

Timnehs are outgoing and playful.  They can develop large vocabularies, just like the Congos.  They are highly intelligent and need lots of stimulation to keep them from getting bored.  Timnehs love to explore new things, and at the same time, are vigilant of their surroundings.

It's important to bathe your Timneh regularly due to the fact that the Timneh produces a dry powder when preening, just like the Congo.

If you want a smaller, good natured parrot, the Timneh African Grey may be the bird of choice for you.
